Yes, I believe that the Qur'an is the untampered with word of God. and I do not think you, or anybody here, wishes to offend me or any other fellow poster. Maybe this is what makes it a bit dull here, but I really appreciate the civility and respect that prevail here.

I love my religion but I am not a fanatic, and having a civil and objective discussion is something I am always ready for. I might not know all the answers, but I know they are there. I, myself have questions. Islam urges us to work our minds and seek the truth. It criticizes people who follow any religion just because it is the religion of their fathers and forefathers. In Qur'an, rhetoric questions such as "do they not think?”, “won’t you contemplate?” or “do they not use their reason?" are very frequent.

Now, to your question:

> However, I would like to pursue this, because I just cant accept ot believe that we have this one little life and then eternity in heaven or hell based entirely on what we did in this tiny, brief life.

Why not? Man's life is short, or tiny, in comparison to the cosmos or to eternity, but for us it is not. We had lived it.. we were given so many days and hours and we made choices. We were given the instinct to differentiate between good and evil, and God also sent us messengers to show us the right and the wrong and we were left to decide which path to chose. We make tens of choices every day and it is based only on these choices that we are going to be judged not based on eternity. Even if it is for only one day, we were either good or bad on that day and that is what we are going to reap.
In Qur'an:
"and whoever has done an atom's weight of good will see it (7) and whoever has done an atom's weight of evil will see it(8)" 99: 7 & 8

>In considering where we go to after this life, perhaps
it helps to ask, where do we come from? Who or what and where were we prior to this life?

God tells us, either in Qur'an or in Hadith that God created the skys, seven skys, and then He created earth. Then He created angels, and then He created Adam and Eve, parents of all people.

All creatures in earth and in the skys worshiped God and they are all in a perpetual state of worshiping and praising God. God wanted to give some of his creatures the freedom of choice, but no created thing would accept it except Man. In Qur'an:
"We offered the trust to Heaven and Earth and to the mountains too, but they refused to carry it and shrank back from it. However, man accepted it: he has been unfair (to himself) and ignorant!" 33:72

Adam and Eve had kids. They had twins, each of different sexes, and because there were no other progeny on earth at that time, siblings were to marry their sisters/ brothers as long as it is not their twin sisters/ brothers. And that's how people became so numerous and scattered in all corners of the world.

Now do not ask me where, how or when did God come into being. There are some things that are not revealed to human beings, and no one but God knows about them. All we know is what God tells us in Qur'an:
"Say: God is The One(1)God is the Source (2) He begot no one, nor was begotted by anyone (3)and there is nothing equal (or comparable) to Him(4)" 112:1-4

>>will go to hell for eternity while others will go
>>there for a while (short or long, depending on their

>>In the holy Qur'an, God says to prophet Mohammed
>>(pbuh):
>>
>>"Say: I control no harm nor any advantage by myself
>>except whatever God may wish. Each nation has a
>>designated time, and when that time comes they won't
>>be able to hold it back for even an hour, nor will
>>they be able to advance it" 10:49
