He watched as his son turned lethally silent, and for a moment he wondered if the kid was going to end up going for his gun and putting a quick end to his scoundral of a father. The idea was dismissed quickly, though--his son had made something of himself, stayed on the right side of the law. He wouldn't waste that on the dirt that had abandoned him, of that he was somewhat sure.

He was a little relieved to see Elden's posture loosen, though. Somehow, the indifference in the kid's eyes was worse than the cold anger. Hell, he'd have liked it better if the kid popped him one. At least it would be some reaction.

He wasn't suprised to find that they'd written him off as dead. In the beginning, it'd been what he'd hoped. It'd be easier for the them to go on thinking that way, than to learn the truth. A short span of silence followed his son's words as he thought of how to reply. Over the years, he'd recited what he'd say to the son he'd left if he ever got the chance...but none of that seemed any damned good now. He was about to speak when Des beat him to it, asking again for his car.

He considered it, breifly. "We'll trade." He tossed her his keys and held out his hand for her to toss her own. It wasn't that he didn't trust her...she was Stan's kid, and that made her family. He just wasn't too keen on the idea of being without wheels. When she'd tossed hers, he turned back to his son.

"Probably would have worked out better if that's the way it'd happened." He spoke in response to them thinking he was dead. It wasn't self pity--it would have made it easier if he'd died and not walked out on them. "The feds found out about the ring. I heard one of the fuzz's kids at the club while I was bouncin', braggin on her daddy's plans to bust us." He remembered the day clearly--it was one of the few times in his life that he'd actually felt something similar to panic. "Tumbler and I talked it over. We thought if we split, it would keep the feds off your ma and the others." He shook his head, reaching to light another cigarette. "Turns out that part worked. Feds wanted Tumbler and I...Memphis, too. We split up...I heard Tumbler got caught right away." Sacrificed himself, more accurately. "And I never did find what happened to Memphis. But I know they kept at my heels for a helluva long time." He stopped, drawing deep on his smoke. "Truth is, kid, your dad's not worth a whole lot. When the heat went down, I shoulda been in contact. I was paranoid about the feds knowing your ma had contact with me--that woulda been all they needed to haul her in, I'm sure. They were looking for any reason to collar anyone who even so much as looked our way." He stopped, frowning. "Ah, screw it. I'm makin' excuses, when there ain't no right for 'em. You and your ma are the only things that ever really mattered to me. I had a real messed up way of showin' it."

He'd never been too great with words, but he'd done the best he could to explain. He fell silent, smoking as he regarded his boy. He was proud to see the man his child had become...his mama had done good raising the boy. A military man...and already more than his father ever was, young as he was.
