Subject: ATTS

Since Sandra brought up the subject of the ATTS, I thought I would start a new thread for this subject. I find these tests very interesting and valuable. For anyone who is not aware of ATTS, it is a test for dogs that measures different aspects of temperament such as stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness as well as the dog's protectiveness towards its handler and/or self-preservation in the face of a threat.

Note that a dog must be 18 months old before they are eligible to take this test. There was a test date in my area this past Summer, but Azaan wasn't 18 months old at the time. I hope to be able to test her in the Winter or next Spring. Here is a link to the test: Description of the ATTS Temperament Test

The other interesting thing about the ATTS test is that they keep statistics on every breed of dog that takes the test. There have only been 12 Boerboels tested through the end of 2008, but all of them have passed! The Boerboels have scored 100%. Statistically speaking, having only 12 Boerboels test is not a large enough of a statistical sampling, but it is a start. There are some other breeds where there are not many dogs sampled, including Filas where only 12 have been tested. With the 12 Filas that took the test, only 9 passed for an overall 75% success rate. There were 14 Neopolitan Mastiffs tested, and only 9 passed for an overall 64.3% success rate. Dogue de Bordeaux had a sampling of 73, and of these 20 failed for an overall success rate of 72.6%. Bullmastiffs come in at 77.8%. The stats for the Boerboels shine in comparison! Breeders must be doing something right!

The results are very interesting!
