I also work for a compay that specializes in the care of mentally and physically handicapped adults.
I, however, disagree with all that you are saying. I get to see the real day to day lives of individuals who-- as you said are "learn[ing] to become more independent"--.
The true fact of the matter is, these individuals never learn to be independent. They live a very poor quailty of life, and die having contributed nothing to society except a large medical bill.

>>>Above average students - hmm...well...if they're above average...why do we need to give them extra equipment when they are already capable of learning without extra stuff?

This is ridiculus!! First of all, these childern are a gift to our society, and ignoring that gift would be wrong. Because these children have the ability to learn at such a high level, we should invest extra time and money to give them the chance to learn more. That money should not be wasted on programs designed to ease our guilty conscience by attempting to teach individuals who are not capable of learning because we would not let them die.

Society in general puts far to much emphasis on "living" and not enough on "quality living."
And, no, learning to hold a ball or sit up by ones self does not equal "quality." These attributes only equal quality when seen in a small baby that will grow and learn, thereby contributing to society.
