I am in the same boat looking for a laptop. It is difficult to get accurate detailed info. Don't hold me to it but I think the Toshiba has a USB 2.0 port while the HP is only 1.0 or 1.1. That is a big difference for future external add-ons which makes the Toshiba more useful regardless of the smaller HD. Regarding reliability I hear less bad things about the Toshiba but that could be because there are a lot less of them out there.
