Subject: Mpule Kwelagobe: “Miss Universe is a celebration of Femininity”

13 years ago, during the Miss Universe contest held in Trinidad & Tobago, the most interesting final question in the history of the pageant was asked:

“If Miss Universe becomes pregnant, should she be allowed to continue with her reign?”

Curiously enough, all three finalists (Diana Nogueira from Spain, Miriam Quiambao from the Philippines and Mpule Kwelagobe from Botswana) answered “Yes, she should continue”.

Kwelagobe’s answer (the eventual winner) stayed in the minds of most people who watched that pageant and still quote her today: “Miss Universe is a celebration of femininity”.
