How could she refuse the possibility of something that set her apart from the masses of other blacks?

After a moment's pause, she adds, her tone becoming more and more confident, "I am willing to work on it as much as I have to. If that's more than everyone else, then so must it be. I certainly don't want to have to wait for everyone else, in any case."
A question flickers flamelike her eyes, but she refuses to speak it, knowing it was not her business. Who was that strange red with the scent of a pack leader, and why was he here?
