BeBe Shopp was always a great ambassador of Miss America. For those who are interested here are her runners up. 1st: Miss Wyoming; 2nd: Miss Alabama; 3rd: Miss Kansas; 4th: Miss Oklahoma. Miss Kansas was Vera J. Ralston. She became a movie actress and starred in some prestigious fare, one of which was "Psycho" (1960). Another actress, Lois Nettleton, made the s/f list that year as Miss Chicago. She was highly respected as an actress particularly on televison.. - I remember as a child, Lois Nettleson was in an episode of a show called Medical Center. I was very young., maybe 4-5. She played a lesbian and they actually said the word on TV. I had never heard that word before so I asked my mom what it meant. She said it was a "girl who likes girls." So, of course, a few weeks later at a family reunion, I was walking around and calling every female there a lesbian, even my Nana, because I knew they all liked girls. In a different way , of course, but my 4 year old brain did not know that part, lol (NT) -- No name, 13:38:22 10/05/25 Sun (241.sub-174-216-4.myvzw.com/174.216.4.241)

The last Miss America winner to pass away was Miss America 1942, Jo-Carroll Dennison of Texas (December 16, 1923 – October 18, 2021) who died in southern California but not before being included in the There She Was (history) book which was released the month before Jo-Carroll had died. | Shocked there are no online obituaries for Beatrice (Be Be) posted here. - Actually Pamela Eldred was the last Miss America to pass away prior to Bebe. Pamela died in July, 2022. (NT) -- No name, 19:44:01 10/08/25 Wed (NoHost/172.56.85.246)
- It actually seems a little weird that the winners in 1970 & 1971 have just died recently in the same time span as the winners from 1942 and 1948. (NT) -- No name, 19:52:03 10/08/25 Wed (137.sub-174-216-2.myvzw.com/174.216.2.137)
- Not only did Bebe live to 95, but she was only 18 when she won Miss America. She literally graduated from high school and won Miss Minnesota and went to Miss America. Some of the winners from the 70's were already in their 20's when they won Miss America. (NT) -- No name, 10:23:05 10/09/25 Thu (NoHost/159.100.209.52)
- Yeah, I realize that, however, it just seems that both Phyllis and Pamela died relatively young. Actually, it seems that a lot of the contestants involved in the 1970 pageant died very young. That particular class has a very high death rate. Pam Eldred would also be counted among them because she was the reigning queen. I wonder if some health hazard existed that year that lead to them contracting various fatal illnesses over the years? It's a similar situation to that John Wayne movie that shot in Nevada, and years later most everyone involved contracted cancer. - The director, former actor, Dick Powell was among the casualties. Also, the beautiful leading lady, Susan Hayward; veteran, Agnes Moorehead; and one well-known supporting player, Pedro Armendariz, who died by his own hand after his diagnosis. This is also dangerous when ancient layers of dust is brought to the surface by bombs and other disturbances. Layers of dangerous soil is breathed in by those in the present. That's why it takes a toll on first responders..2 others movies came to mind regarding deaths not long after film wrapped up: "Rebel Without a Cause". James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, Nick Adams all died violently. With another movie, "The Boys in the Band" 5 of the leads died from Aids. - Hmmm.....maybe the Miss America winners of the Vietnam war era, early 1970s, contracted a form of agent orange disease. Other than Leanza Cornett (who died of a fall in her kitchen in October 2020) any Miss America died of accidents, shootings, car/vehicle/airplane crashes, or any sort of not sickness deaths? -- Fan, 14:56:41 10/11/25 Sat (syn-137-027-094-098.biz.spectrum.com/137.27.94.98)

Her appearance on the Miss America stage last month was the highlight of the pageant for me. I have never ever teared up while watching a pageant until she came out. May she rest in eternal peace.
