S’peer chuckled at his daughter’s antics, sending a smile to Halzay that was amused as well as apologetic. At least one of them trusted him – even if his swimming skills were nothing to M’att’s. S’peer had never been one for the water, except as a place to splash around, or chat to the dolphins, or flirt with whoever was swimming with him. He was reasonably confident that he could stop Sally drowning – and the dolphins or Scarth would be there in case she got into trouble.

But S’peer’s frighteningly quick temper pricked up its ears at Halzay’s words. She didn’t trust him with his own daughter? The tension in the bluerider’s shoulders would have warned a person who knew him better, and knew how to read him – Scarth touched his rider’s mind warningly, and felt S’peer’s acknowledgement of the reminder. But that didn’t stop him from being angry – did she think she was going to molest a child? Shards! Any man had the right to be angry at such an implication. Especially when he knew how much Halzay didn’t want to interact with him; what other explanation for this suggestion was there? He bit down hard on the anger, though – it wouldn’t help his situation – and kept his voice quiet. “I’m not going to hurt her, or anything, you know.”

I do not need to. He knows. Scarth’s weary voice betrayed how tired he was getting of the situation. But equally, it would never cross his mind to hurt the girl. If only humans didn’t get so attached to their offspring… You have to admit it, life is much easier for the parents if the children leave them at hatching…
