My parents never gave any indication that they enjoyed giving a spanking. Before it happened, they would think it over to decide and come to an agreement that it was needed. If they had liked to spank, they would have just used any excuse to do it, and they often decided not to, even sometimes when a case could have been made for a spanking. And what a relief that was. It was all a very serious event that nobody wanted.
Anyone around at the time knew that if they saw or heard someone being punished that it was for good reason. The shame of a spanking was not just being punished in such an undignified way, reacting to it like a small child with all the pleading, crying, kicking and desperation, but there was everyone's clear knowledge that the one making such a fuss had been a very bad boy or girl. Just imagine being a teenager, and your disgrace is made that plain to the entire family and anyone else within earshot of the event. If one of us was sitting restlessly on a pillow at dinner, looking unhappy and thoroughly contrite, it was not because we were a victim of sadistic parenting. We had been bad, and justice had been served.
