I agree with you 100%. The problem is, and this is just a question I do not have the answer to, if something isn't fast tracked to change the perceptions, wouldn't taking many generations to get up to today's speed mean that when they do finially do get there (or here), they are still two generations behind? I am not sure I asked that clearly.

Someone posted response to one of my earlier postings that made more sense to me than anything else ever said on here. It is driving me nuts now as I now have to completely rethink my views in some matters. He stated, (I paraphrase), "There is difference between what people think they need and that which they really need." WOW!!! Sit back and run that through your head for awhile. Having spent many years in PNG I almost picture the situation. We have 20% of the people who are educated and live in the monetary system, who want to move on in modernization. We have 80% of the population who live an entirely different lifestyle and like it just fine. When the peace corps went into PNG they did not go there to directly help the educated to modernize the cities for the people who want to move on. No, we went in and tried to modernize the sector who are perfectly happy the way things are. So this leads to a delima. Here comes the peace corps acting on the request of the educated to improve their country in an area where the people we are working with really don't want this change. Therefore it is really a waste of time because the minute we leave they just revert right back to their old ways which better suit their needs. It sort of reminds me of an undesired Christmas present. Say mny wife goes out and gets me a really neat looking gadget for my workshop. One that I would have never bought for myself. When I open the present I am very greatful for the present. I make a big deal out of it to show my appreaciation, but after that, I throw the damn thing in a box and never look at it again because I prefer to use another gadget that I am use to. She wasted her money but feels real good about it.

My thinking about this is going in all sorts of directions. How do you balance the desires of the minority in PNG to move forward with the desires of the marjority(the potential middle class) who are happy the way things are? The population of the minority isn't great enough to carry the nation forward and the majority don't want to be carried anywhere. Very complexing indeed.

I hate some of my thoughts, but one of them is, move all of the educated people to another land somewhere and turn all of PNG into a protected nature park. Let the people of the land continue to live their more natural lifestyles.
