Subject: Is the wantok system a good thing?

The wantok system was never meant to apply to anything but the small individual clans. Yet we have extended this anachronism to our entire country. People say that it is a good thing but I don’t agree.

The wantok system is nothing more then a convenient excuse for failure. We say that this is a welfare system and so it is. But do we want an entire culture based on welfare! Wealth creation for the individual leads to employment for the masses. We can not all be financial leaders because we do not all have the necessary capabilities to be such.

When a person creatively tries to establish an industry in PNG all the wantoks come and beg for this and insist on that until the whole industry is destroyed before it even has a chance to succeed. Far from being a good thing, the wantok system does nothing more then rob our country from the new business starts it needs to provide the employment for our people.

So lets scrap the wantok system and accept a new system of reward for work. No work means no reward. Work and get paid for the work that you do. Stop suffocating the people who are willing to do the things necessary to build this country.
