Because your ancestors life expectency was only about 25 years. It is true they could cure a lot of the sicknesses they had between the ages of birth and twenty or so years but after that they were lost. Another thing to remember is that the child survival rate was very low. I can not speak for PNG people but in many areas of the world 1000 years ago only one in ten children born survived to age one and about 1 in 10 child births killed the mother. Even in the US the life expectency of adult males was only 45 years at the turn of the century. So to try to compare modern medicines to those of a hundred years ago is a no brainer.

Ask yourself this. If you get really sick, who are you going to ask for help today? An Australian trained local doctor with a bag of Wonder drugs or a tribal doctor with a hand full of leaves and a funny looking face mask? Chances are the medicine the local doc gives you was made from the leaves the village doc is waving, but he knows more about how to use it and in what dosage.
