Sorry that was a typographical error. I meant to say that Australia with a little over half the population of Canada have received 4 Nobel prizes (rather than one) in Medicine and Physiology (Note I am not talking about all Nobel prizes) compared to Canada which has only had one (Banting for the discovery of insulin).

That was only an example to illustrate the point that for probability statistics to apply to a certain the degree of variability in whatever variable you are measuring must be similar in all populations.

Clearly if there is a more intense training and coaching program for swimmers in Australia despite it's 18 million population they will always be superior to Indonesias' 200 million.
