Subject: Re: Did we say PNGians aren't lazy? PROPER COMPARISON OF WORK
In reply to: 's message, "Did we say PNGians aren't lazy?" on 08:09:48 01/11/00 Tue

In analysing the situation, consider 1 factor that if not properly assessed can cause complications and lead to wrong conclusions:

1/ The amount of WORK that the society puts out must be judged as men's work + women's work. You cannot separate them. You have to add them both together in making this comparison of whether resource and land shortage is the underlying cause and reason for the socalled 'hard work' ethic. Right now, women carry the greatest burden in the village, and perhaps men carry a bigger burden in the cash economy. They should not be assessed without looking at the work burden of the other sex and adding them together. You must do this if you compare city work vs rural work.

Chinese and Indians definitely overpopulated their fertile valleys before they migrated to other areas, just like people from Chimbu. Small wonder that they learned to work long hours cause it was their only choice!!

Em tasol.
