Subject: Miss Ohio Teen USA

Hello. I know this forum may not be “teen” Ohio, but it’s the closet forum I could find. My daughter applied and received an email to complete in the Miss Ohio Teen USA pageant.

My question is, do they accept most girls that apply or is there some type of screening with answers /photo she completed?

This is all completely foreign to us.

Thank you!

[> Subject: This is the place! All pageants accept all applicants. You got the money? You're in. They make it seem like something more but it isn't. btw, They will ask you to sell 'ad pages' for $500+/pg for the program book. It's a money maker for state & national level pageants but it makes no difference in their winning or placing. Please don't spend a dollar on ad pages. Since this is her first pageant, don't spend big money. Don't go to the gown shops where they can show her gowns that start at ~$1,000 and can go to $10,000. Instead use or borrow a homecoming/ prom dress she likes and feels good in or find something on resale. Same for the fitness wear.

[> [> Subject: Don't want to bring your daughter's ambitions down, but you may consider a smaller pageant to start, to get her feet wet before you pay over $1,000 to enter Teen USA, then all the expenses for the weekend- 3 nights hotel $350, meals $300, and gas $70 = $1,720 before you even buy a pair of shoes. btw, I just checked the hotel across from the Vern Riffe Center and it is sold out on that weekend. I think USA has some locals that may charge $250ish and are a day pageant. She may also consider the Ohio Volunteer pageant. It may be half the price of USA but is the 2nd weekend after Labor Day. They are also starting locals.

[> Subject: She will also need a headshot, which can run $600 plus. As an alternative, consider contacting your local Career Center. Ours has digital design program so they know photography and photoshopping and have all the equipment. The students may be able to do it for you very inexpensively or for free. As a mom who knows teens get super excited about things, I'm giving you info and context if your daughter pushes you for the best of everything, feeling otherwise she won't do well. As with starting any hobby, don't go buying the top of the line until you know it's something she really really wants to pursue and she's had enough experience. You can put a girl in a $5,000 dress, but if she can't walk, it really won't make a bit of difference in her scores.

[> Subject: Another point well made above - learning how to “pageant” is important. Find a good coach, I’d recommend Rian Valentine for USA, especially Teen. She’s had several of the past few winners.
