Subject: 2021 Iowa State Fair

About 10 days ago following a very disappointing county fair, I speculated that my county fair was a limited regional sample in an area where smoking rates had been plummeting faster than the national average for a decade. I didn't anticipate the decline of smoking would be as bad at my state fairs where numbers had been holding up better than my county fair in other recent years. Unfortunately, my assessment was not correct. If anything, the decline of smoking was even more obvious at the Iowa State Fair this year than at my county fair, with my sightings numbers over three days down 45% compared to 2019, generally leaving me longing for the comparative good old days of the 2017 Indiana State Fair.

It's hard to overstate how terrible things are for smoking in the Midwest right now, my long-feared moment of rapidly diminishing returns realized. With few exceptions, young and attractive female faces are wrapping their lips around vaping devices while the only ones still smoking are their mothers and grandmothers.

There were still some worthwhile finds that should make these accounts worth reading for those who enjoy my reports, with the potential for a handful making some sort of year-end list.

Day 1 was on Saturday and was the weakest of the three days, right down there with one of my worst days of fetishing of all-time.

Day 2 was on Monday and was the best of the bunch, producing a couple of great sightings playing out in tandem.

And Day 3 was on Thursday. It was far from great but had some saving moments.

I still have two major fair venues over three collective days to help turn my luck but suffice it to say I'll be pleasantly surprised to salvage any truly great days.
