I just read Saturday, your worst day. One thing that impressed me was as bad as the day was you got a decent amount of sightings in a variety of areas of the fair. At the Montana fair the beer tent was extraordinary but most of the fair had hardly any smokers at all. One of my thoughts was that aliens from outer space walked around the fairgrounds (outside the beer tent) and studied the human race they would not have anything to say about smoking because they would likely see no one smoking.

Your male gender gap observations were disturbing. The latest official government stats (which are "old" now 2019) actually show the lowest male gender gap on record, like 2 points. Part of this IMO is because up until fairly recently it seemed more men vaped and this dramatically lowered male smoking numbers. Things very well could have changed since then, especially among the young.

My dating site stats (which are very current and have huge samples of real people, I believe these are valuable) match your observations, the largest male smoking gaps ever recorded. I realize people attend the fair from all over the state but Des Moines has it's highest ever (in modern times of course) 10 point male smoking gap. This believe it or not is not extreme. There are places with 20 and even 30 point male smoking gaps among young adults.

I just finished Pennsylvania and of all states through PA only six metro areas have a female gap. 10 (and especially 20) years ago almost half of cities had female gaps in the dating site stats. So this is a radical change for the worse.

Billings Montana is one of those rare 6 metro areas with a female smoking gap and yes I noticed it when I was there. This makes me trust these dating stats more than ever. BTW a city semi close to you (bit still a long drive) that is in the elite six with a female smoking gap is Duluth MN. Interesting how a few select cities are bucking this trend.

I am not quite as optimistic that more young men smoking means more women will start smoking. I could see how that would happen, girlfriends curious about their boyfriend's smoking and trying it. But I think this young generation has all kinds of messed up ideas. They could very well be reverting back to the non-western culture way of looking at smoking, that it is appropriate for boys but unattractive and undesirable for girls.
