Subject: Failed 640x480 mod: These horrible little toaster boxes are stealing my sanity!!!

You all probably know the problems I've been having getting my CC to do 640x480 via the VGA mod with a 575 board installed.

Last weekend, I swapped my PowerBook 100 for another (stock) CC, hoping to have better luck with it. Today was my first chance to open it. All I wanted to so was see if I scored a jumpered analog board, or one of the jumperless variety like the one in my original CC. I was disappointed to see another jumperless a/b staring up at me, as these things scare me ever since my initial failure.

This new CC was also host to a legion of little metal objects waiting to short out it's guts - staples, a thumb-tack and a few others. There was also far more dust than a machine this old should have so I decided to disassemble it and clean 'er out. This involved removing the fan which I have never done before.

Not sure how to reassemble the fan assembly, I took the back off my old CC (with the failed 640x480 mod), pulled out its fan assembly and used it for comparison. No problem - the new CC's fan assembly was promptly reassembled and stuck in. I closed up the new (stock) CC, plugged in a keyboard and turned it on. Great stuff. It booted and gave me the flashing ? as there is no system installed. I turned it off.

At this point I realised that I forgot to feel for airflow coming from the fan (to check I had put it together properly). I flicked it back on, hit the power key, and nothing. My newly aquired CC (price: 1 PowerBook) was dead. It wouldn't chime, wouldn't spin up, nothing. Just some almost inaudiable squealing when switched on at the back. I tried again and again but nothing.

All I could think of was that maybe I had stuffed up the fan installation. At this point, my old CC (with the failed mod) was still lying open without its fan. In order to test my inference, I reinstalled the old CC's fan, put the cover back on and booted it up. Even though the video stopped working since the failed mod, the CC would still chime and spin up the drives, which was enough to make a comparison against my new CC. It booted, chimed, and spun up the fan and drives. OK, so the fan's fine. Then... I GOT A SCREEN IMAGE. At 640x480, in serious need of adjustment (positioned so far to the left it wraps over to the right) but it was there. I haven't touched the analog board since this mod failed two weeks ago. All I had done was open the mac, take out and replace the fan and stick the case back together.

Wondering what to do with the new CC. I opened it up, verified all the connections, removed and replaced the fan - more firmly this time - and it too works again. So now I guess I have a working Mystic and a stock CC.

Of course, now I'm scared to even breathe on my Mystic let alone open it for fear it'll stop working. I wouldn't feel comfortable using it as my main machine as I'd always be waiting for the day when I turn it on and nothing happens.

In short: What the hell is going on ?!?!?

As I said in the title, this is driving me insane.

Cheers,
Adam.
