Oh yeah! They could leave a bruise if they wanted to. I never said that they couldn't bruise us with that thing. They could, and they sometimes did.

Some of the boys actually claimed that if MacMillan bruised you, it was less painful for you. I wouldn't know about that. They never left me with the bruises, and Lincoln always handed my disciplining. (There's a story behind that)

But what the horse-stick did do was it gave a wicked sting that did not, at all, feel like a paddle.

Worse, the sting did not go away for days. The sting was so intense that sometimes boys peed.

(Not like a regular kind of peeing, mind you. More along the line of, the moment the feeling of the pain hits your brain, you just kinda lose momentary control for a second, and a little bit drops out.)

I've heard adults joke over the years about spanking their kid so hard that he couldn't sit down. I never truly got that from the paddle. If you asked me at the time, I might say I did, but not really.

Most kids are drama queens.

However, that could actually be the case with a horse-stick. Sometimes we could get these welts, where the skin just puffs up right at the spot that we were struck.

Sitting on that welt was incredibly painful, especially the day we actually received the strikes. A day or two later, it still hurt to sit, but was manageable.

And I don't know why why the boys called that a "horse-stick". I have rode many horses, and I actually had high marks in horsemanship, but I have never used anything like that on a horse.

I never heard the term "swagger stick" until the v1 Sgt Slaughter GI Joe action figure was released via mail away in 1985. (The action figure came with a miniature, as an accessory.)

The Horse-stick hurt so bad that we didn't want to be wearing our shorts afterwards. So often we would just go back to our dorm and lay face down on our bed, with our pants down, (Sometimes, for hours) crying into (or under) our pillow.
