A little bit of relief, a little bit of guilt. It depended on the specific situation. I can remember feeling guilty and wanting to fess up to something, but I don’t believe I ever did.

There is one incident in particular that really sticks out. My great grandmother was a painter, and she had painted this…porcelain thing that was a painting of my grandmother holding my mother as a baby. Lots of generations to cover here.

Anyway, I was playing with a ball inside the house, which I was not allowed to do. Throwing a ball around was almost a compulsion for me. I had undiagnosed (at the time) ADHD and it may have been a way for me to let off excess energy. You guessed it, I broke the painting. My mom wasn’t home at the time and when she discovered it she cried the whole day. No anger that I could tell, just sadness. I lied about breaking it and I felt AWFUL. I should have fessed up and taken the spanking. I probably would have had my mouth washed out with soap for the lie, too.

The reward for my lack of confessing? I still feel guilt over it, and it was over 20 years ago.
