Those kinds of things absolutely stay with you.

There was one time that I may have gotten my babysitter in trouble, and that one stuck with me for years. We were playing house and I thought it would be fun to be the naughty kid and I tore up a bunch of fast food coupons. They were printed on green paper and kind of looked like money. I honestly thought it was no big deal because there were like 50 of them, and I left most of them intact. We almost never got fast food, and I thought we'd never be able to use them all. Well, I forgot to dispose of the evidence. The next day my mom saw it and was not pleased. She asked me who did it, and without hesitation I straight up lied. I said the babysitter did it. The next words out of her mouth were, "She ought to have her ass spanked!" Gulp. I just knew if she told my babysitters mom, who just happened to be my mom's best friend, then I was probably dead meat. If they believed my babysitter, then I'd be on the hook for the coupons AND lying. Mom had already made it quite clear that she thought a spanking was in order, and then the lying on top of that? I shudder to think what would have become of me, lol.

But I never heard more about it. For years I was convinced I had caused her to get a spanking and I felt just terrible about it
