Sonya,

I don’t mean to interrupt your give and take with Gary Steven, but I was touched by your sweet recollection about a teacher who was so gentle with you, both emotionally and physically.

Teachers like him counterbalanced the really mean ones who unfortunately took advantage of their position. I had teachers of both kinds and was grateful for the gentle ones.

My second grade teacher had a paddle which hung on the wall of her classroom, but it was common knowledge that she never used it. She was gentle, intelligent and empathetic and simply never required force or the threat of force to maintain order in her classroom. When I was in the fourth grade, I once asked her why she had a paddle that everyone in the school knew she never used and she told me that when she first started teaching, a friend of hers gave it to her as a joke and it had become a type of good luck charm.

I felt very safe in that classroom.

JB
