I was born and raised in the South in the mid to late Fifties, Sixties and early Seventies. The only bare bottom spankings that I ever got and saw were in preschool and kindergarten. The preschoolers were taken care of by Miss Amerson. Whilst Miss Browning took care of the kindergarteners. They were both spinsters who devoted their lives to their vocation (teaching) and the church. I received one spanking each from these ladies. On both occasions I got into trouble each time with some other kids also! The spanking from Miss Amerson came about because I, along with another boy and girl, would not sit still and keep quiet during 'nap time'. Despite one clear warning the three of us carried on moving about and giggling. Miss Amerson decided enough was a enough and we were taken out into the cloakroom which abutted onto her classroom. It was here that she dealt out her spankings. Depending on the nature of the offence, spankings, from Miss Amerson, consisted of either half a dozen or a dozen smacks with her hand! As spankings go they were very mild. But they were on the bare skin and our young bottoms keenly felt every stinging slap. All three of us went over her knee and got our six slaps, three on each cheek. Myself and the other boy tried to remain stoical but by the end of it were owing and ouching in pain. We were also moist eyed. The girl, I think her name was Debbie, cried from the start and was sobbing by the end. Interestingly, as her dress was lifted up after her painties had been taken down, there were marks, fading ones, on her bottom. Clear signs of a recent spanking! Miss Amerson commented on this, saying "I see you've been a naughty girl at home as well!" I remember, even though I was only five years old at the time, being excited by the sight of her chubby little buttocks and the fading hand/finger marks on her bottom.

The following school year I was in Miss Browning's class. Myself and this boy called Richard were making faces at one another when Miss Browning was reading to us during 'story time hour'! We had been warned once about this but failed to heed this warning. Mrs Browning, who had 'eyes in the back of her head it seemed, caught us doing it again and we were escorted into her 'office'. In actual fact, it was nothing more than a smally utility room with a sink and some storage space where various supplies of thing were kept. There was also a small table and a straight back chair where she could sit and do any admin work that needed to be done. It was also the place where Mrs Browning administered spankings. Once there she wasted no time and taking down my pants and underwear put me over her lap! And for the next 30 or so seconds her hand and my backside had 'a short sharp conversation'! By the end of it my butt cheeks were warm and stinging and I was crying softly. Although her spankings were more vigorous than Miss Amerson's compared to my Mom's and Auntie's they were mild. Richard got his bare bottom smacked and when she was done we returned to the classroom. We had to sit next to her and she continued reading to the class!

The moral of these two spankings is that I never again messed about during 'nap time' or was disruptive during 'story time hour'! During my two school years being looked after and taught by these ladies it was unusual, over a fortnightly period, for at least one child not to earn themselves a spanking. And although the children in their care were afforded 'visual privacy' (accept when they were 'partners in crime' and were spanked together) you always knew when a spanking was in progress since you could not but clearly hear it. Doors were left open so that all the children in the class were aware a spanking was in progress! I think these ladies valued the deterrent factor! Sometimes if a child had done something especially naughty they would administer a more serious spanking. But these were still given out of sight!

I did overhear a bare bottom spanking in one of the higher grades a few years later. I would, in another post, be happy to relate this. And I also heard stories claiming that bare bottom spankings had taken place elsewhere in the school over the years! But it is/was impossible for me to verify any of these claims! In the American South back in the Sixties and early to mid Seventies I would not casually dismiss, as untrue, any of the stories about spankin's and whuppin's I had told to me! But also I would not completely discount the possibility that some of these tales were, if not complete fabrications, then somewhat embellished exaggerations about what actually did happen! Yes truth is sometimes stranger than fiction; but not always!
