Well Brett, you like everybody else here is entitled to your opinion. But this forum is named Childhood Spanking Memories and that is the context in which I chose to give my opinions on this topic.

I managed to get quite a few spankings growing up because being a typically hard headed boy from the Central Kentucky area, I managed to get in and out of trouble fairly often and didn't always learn my lesson the first time. With the exception of a few times my brother lied on me in his attempts to get out of trouble which more than once got us both spanked, I can with honesty say, I deserved most of the spankings I got. As far as spankings go, they were embarrassing as hell because mom always spanked bare bottom no matter where we were or who was present at the time. They hurt for a few hours regardless of whether it was by hand or with an implement. But they were never abusive.

I did get two beatings as a kid. They not only left me pretty badly bruised up, but they caused some long term emotional damage.

When I was six I was beaten by my Grandmother's husband. He was angry because she asked him to come pick me up at ball practice. Whenever I spoke he screamed at me to shut up and after a couple of times he hit me in the face. Then he drove to a utility access road and pulled off. He hit me in the face again and I was crying, then he got out of the truck and pulled my pants and underwear off, then forced me down on the seat, face down and proceeded to beat the hell out of me, screaming at me the entire time. I have no idea how long he hit me, and the more I screamed and struggled, the harder he hit. Then I felt his full weight on top of me and I blacked out. Then next thing I remembered was sitting in the seat trying to put my clothes back on and him driving towards my house. When we got to the top of the street, he pulled a knife on me and told me, "You ever say a word to anybody about this and I'll cut your fucking guts out."

When we got to the house, I was hurting all over, especially my butt, I had bruises on my face from where he'd hit me. Mom asked me what was wrong and he spoke up and lied to her saying I got hit in the face with a line drive which was a believable lie since I was the pitcher. Even saying, "Yeah you should have seen it, even though he got hit right in the face, he still grabbed the ball and threw the runner out at second." I told mom I wasn't hungry and asked if I could just take a bath and go to bed. Honestly even though he died ten years ago, I still hate that man. The last time I saw him was in 1995. He came into the store where I worked and struck up a conversation with me. I was not nice to him. In fact I told him to get out of my store while he still can and if I ever saw him again, I'd kill him. He died in a nursing home about twelve years ago. I still carry that hate in me.

The other beating was from my cousin Carmen. She was twelve and I was seven going on eight at the time. She decided to moon me along with my brother and her two brothers as well and when she did, I gave her a playful slap on her bare butt. She got mad and slapped me. But that wasn't the end of it. She had one of her brothers break a "switch" off of one of my Grandmother's Maple trees. Then she, my brother and her brothers all jumped me and stripped me. I was forced over her knee and while my brother and other cousins held my wrists and ankles, she beat hell out of my naked ass with that "switch". She was hitting me as hard as she could and left me black and blue with a few places that broke the skin. When she finally quit, they all laughed at and made fun of me. I grabbed my clothes and ran down to my Grandmother's garden to be alone. I didn't like getting real spankings, but never had a problem with getting and giving playful ones. But while she enjoyed doing it, what she did to me that afternoon was anything but fun. and in fact was abusive.

So there is a big difference in getting your bare bottom spanked by your mother for misbehaving and having a sore bottom for a couple of hours and somebody beating the living hell out of you and leaving you bruised up for days.
