As an argument, isn't it kind of pointless? Who decides where the line is between the two, if there even is a line? To someone who sees any spanking as a violent act, it is likely considered to be a beating. But then some don't see "beating" as a word with negative meaning, and happily use it when characterizing the spankings they like.

Beating has a negative connotation to me, so I use it to describe any act of repeated striking or hitting that I feel is unjust or too severe, even if it could also be called a spanking. I'm a spanko, so "spanking" is a magical sound to me. When it's right, and produces a positive result, it's good. A good spanking is never a beating to me. I'm not making an argument.
