Chapter 2
Patches of warm, summer sunshine shone through the leaves of the forest, and danced along the path. Walking steadily, Winter's Fury keep his evil-looking eyes fixed on the tiny harechild skipping along in front of him. In the fox's mind, the tiny child resembled a small piece of a living creature, so he called her Little Bit.

Little Bit turned around and ran over to the fox. "Winna, I's 'ungry."

Winter's Fury scooped up the babe and set her on his shoulder. "Another mile, then we will rest and eat."

"Anuvva mile," repeated Little Bit as she stroked the fox's headfur with a chubby paw. The small hare took a look around from her vantage point on the fox's shoulder. "Issa dey 'ungry too, Winna?" she asked.

"Is who hungry, Little Bit?"

"Dose uns dere," she replied, indicating behind them with her arm. Winter's Fury felt hot anger rush through his body. Somebeast was following them. He swung Little Bit off of his shoulder and set her feet gently on the ground.

"Hide."

Little Bit knew the routine well. She walked took a few steps into the forest and crawled underneath a thick bramble. Winter's Fury dropped the haversack on the path and drew one of his twin blades. Turning around, the fox's evil-looking eyes spotted creatures coming towards him, two raggedy stoats. He walked out to meet them.

As the stoats approached, the smaller of the two began speaking loudly to his companion, drawing a rusty dagger, "Weel, lookit what we got 'ere, brother. Some fox walk'n through th' forest like ee owns it." He grinned, showing his rotting teeth.

"Aye," replied the other, "ee must not know that this stretch o' path 'ere belong ta us, n' other beasts needta pay ta walkit."

The first spoke again, this time directing his comments to Winter's Fury. "Give us yore swords, yore havysack, n' that little rabbit we saw ya with. Or ya can pay us with yore life."

The other stoat began to chuckle with excitement, "Yaahawhaw, et's been along time since we've tasted rabbit stew, eh brother?

Winter's Fury's eyes glinted dangerously. He held out his sword's blade to the first stoat.

"Do you want this sword?"

"Aye, that uns fer me n' the other's fer me brother." Believing that the fox was surrendering, the stoat stepped forward to relieve Winter's Fury of his blade. The fox drew the sword back slightly and thrust it into the stoat's belly, slaying him instantly.

Seeing his brother fall, the other stoat drew his rusty cutlass and charged the fox. "Slay'n my brother's the worst mistake ya ever made fox. Yaaaaaaah!"

Winter's Fury was anticipating the charge. As the first stoat fell, he had drawn his second sword. As the second stoat charged, the fox held the blade straight out towards the oncoming attack. Unable to stop himself, the stoat ran into the keen blade.

"One sword for you, and the other for your brother."

Winter's Fury cleaned his blades and sheathed them. He walked back to where he had left the haversack on the path and found Little Bit sitting nearby. As the fox approached, the tiny hare ran forward and embraced his tail. He scooped her up into his arms and began to gently stroke her ears.

"Whose dey, Winna?" she asked him.

"Badbeasts."

She thought hard for a moment. "Not bad ennymore, is dey Winna."

Winter's Fury's mouth curved in a rare smile.

"No, Little Bit, they are not bad anymore.

The bodies of the two stoats were left on the path, exactly as they had fallen. A warning to any other beast who may be following.
