Arion whispered in her horse’s ear, “Diolla lle, meldir. {Thank you, friend.}” In the ancient language of her forefathers. The horse nickered, as if he understood her. As she grasped handfuls of Kaval’s thick, white mane, she finally looked up. The black bark of the Whitimor tree ahead of them stood out above all else. She screamed her horse’s name at the top of her lungs, but he seemed oblivious. Suddenly, all time seemed to be in slow motion, and she could hear herself, screaming in the background, but it was only a faint noise now…She could hear the thundering of Kaval’s hooves, but that also was very faint…She could hear slow, sad music floating slowly through her ears, and that was what stood out the most to her…
Finch frowned as he and his parents ate the cake. No seventeen year old would stay out that long. Especially not on their mother’s birthday. He excused himself politely and looked out the window in search of his sister. No sign of her. “Mother, Father, why would Arion be out this long?” He asked quietly. His father replied quickly, “Your sister isn’t here?”
“No.”
His father, Zinto, bolted the last of his cake and courteously helped his wife to stand. Zinto saddled his dark brown stallion, and Finch stepped lightly onto his. Her black body shifted uneasily beneath him. “T’lesk, Dentach. {Easy, Dentach.}” She seemed to calm a bit, and paced, eager to go. Finch smiled and signaled to his father. Zinto nodded and they both set off. They started at a gallop, but soon the horses tired and began to sweat heavily. Finch was sweating as well, and as a drop of clear, salty liquid dripped into his deep brown eye, he saw it. But only for a second. “That way, dad!” He shook the image out of his mind, trying to rid himself of the picture of Arion on the ground, bleeding from the chest. Kaval was lying beside her, but in much better shape. His leg looked to be broken, but he rested it on the ground, so he was in no pain. He looked at his father, but Zinto was not looking in the right direction. As soon as Finch looked to where he had seen his sister lay, she was gone. He looked left and right, but could not find her.
Arion gasped for breath, holding a slender hand over her wound where Kaval had struck her. She jerked sharply as a handsome, concerned looking face appeared over hers. “Valdesk letruma, nala?” She realized he was speaking Elvish, but she was too weak to understand what he had said. “Saes…Tatya? {Please…Repeat?}” She said weakly. He raised his eyebrows in surprise, and repeated what he had said. “Valdesk letruma, nala? {Are you alright, Miss?}” She looked at him like he was an idiot and pointed to her chest with a long finger. He nodded and smiled at her as he rummaged around in a pack. He removed her red-stained hand and bandaged her neatly. She managed to stammer, “Diolla lle, Bas. {Thank you, Sir.}” He smiled at her again and nodded. “Emit saesa. {My pleasure.}”
He took her golden-tan hand in his fair one and helped her stand. “Shall we be off?” He asked her in English. She nodded dumbly and followed him. She looked behind her, though, and saw six men carrying her horse on a stretcher. She smiled at the sight and faced her eyes ahead of her.
