Once upon a time, there were three princesses living in a castle far, far away with their father the king.The youngest was named Sapsorrow and the other two sister's names are not worth hearing. They were very cruel to Sapsorrow, starving her and calling her names.
One day the king decided that the one thing the girls needed was a mother's care. The royal tradition was to see which female finger the ring fitted, then the king would marry her.
Sapsorrow's two cruel sisters did not like the idea of a stepmother, but the idea of being a queen was liked, so they went to try on the ring. The first sister's finger was too small, and the second's was too big and as a result it got stuck. Sapsorrow heard her sister's cries and helped her to get it off. She did not realize what ring it was and put it on. It fit perfectly, and oh, woe! Just then the king entered...
