Peter disappointed with Miss Universe judging
By VERDEL BISHOP Wednesday, July 23 2008

Miss Universe franchise holder, Peter Elias, has expressed disappointment over this year’s Miss Universe pageant judging in Vietnam.

Elias told Newsday he felt confident that this country’s representative, Anya Ayoung-Chee should have been among the top five finalists and described the judging process as subjective.

“I wish Trinidad and Tobago could have seen Anya in Vietnam. After the pageant, Miss Venezeula and Miss Colombia also expressed their disappointment. They too, expected TT in the top five with them. They too, wanted to know what happened,” Elias said.

Elias added that in his 15 years of involvement with the pageant, this is the first time he has written to the organisation to try to determine what went wrong, however, he is still waiting on a response.

“I am disappointed because we gave our best; the entire team really worked hard. In our judgement and in the judgement and opinion of others while we were there, and based on the positive feedback, we felt confident that this country would have done well.

“Anya is very intelligent, vibrant and amazing. She worked really hard and was very prepared. She deserved it and I had high expectations because of her performance,” Elias said.

Elias said Ayoung-Chee will return to TT in a couple weeks, as she deserves a little time to breathe and to travel a bit.

Pre-pageant favourites included Miss Trinidad and Tobago Miss Venezuela, Miss Mexico, Miss Puerto Rico and Miss South Africa. However, the big award of Miss Universe 2008 went to Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza – dubbed as the girl with modern beauty, dynamic and confident characteristics.

MUO need to make it clear to the franchise holder what they are looking for exactly. All these pageant companies spend so much freakin' money to get their ladies to the pageant-it is the least that they can do.

I hope MT&TU/W09 is held this year.

To my recollection this is only the 2nd time that I have heard Peter say openly how well he expected a delegate to do-the first was Wendy just before she left for MU1998-he said she may place first in the EG segment which she did.

Well to know that Miss Venezuela and Colombia expected her there, with them in the top 5, is a clear reflection of how well our girl performed at MU. I hope peter gets a response from the MUO. I too, would like to know what their response would be. Yes, she did not place but I still feel sooo proud of her, I think she really gave it her best. To Peter, please do not get discouraged by this, continue to work hard to mould young women like Anya... our miss universe...

i dont know i just really have to question this. I mean yes maybe she was a `favorite` with the Vietnamese people, and a large part of that had to do with her Asian look. I think she performed well, but I wont go as far as labeling her a favorite. She was one of my favs yes, but thats because i`m a trini and I love all our girls but the overall consensus on other boards etc, was not as great for her as Venezuela, Colombia,India and some of these other girls.
And year after year many girls who are thought to be quite strong, don't always make it. There are so many other women this year who were really strong...and didn't make it into the 15. so i dont get the questioning of her non-inclusion

...for me the top 15 was overally pretty weak but the top 5 were strong. I still have to wonder why India, France, Korea, Ireland, Israel etc. did not make it- What the heck is MUO looking for? I think this is what Peter Elias is trying to find out because I am sure MUO has told the individual franchise holders what they want but so many weak delegates made it ahead of more deserving ladies.

at the end of the day it mostly comes down to the performance on the night of the presentation show. maybe a girl looks awesome leading up to the show, but if she fails to shine on that night...if she doesn't have that high-impact gown, if her runway skills aren't that good...well all the pre-show hype can just crumble. and i think this is what happens to alot of the girls.

I understand your point.

You would always hear them say before the announcement of the top 15 that the top 15 were chosen based on the prelim competition (gown, interview and swimsuit) ALONG with votes from members of the MUO. I dont think they would base everything on the prelim night. A girl could look stunning in anything and may not have a personality to match.

So I thought that Anya had a great chance. Based on comments made about her representation from Peter.

Maybe they should have said, Based on the prelim show, here are the top 15.....
