Subject: Jaison Williams

Jaison Williams is looking to go to his 5th school in a 2 and a half year period. That can’t help his chances of latching on with a big time program. He wants playing time, and I doubt any coach of a major program would make promises to him on that issue. His transfer from Xavier isn’t all his fault. A coaching change can change the makeup of any team, and Thad Matta couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get Dedrick Finn. Players get penalized because they must sit for a year before they can play, when the coach that recruited them can leave in a heartbeat and be coaching the next day. Nobody here is really to blame except the system itself. It is unfair. It is what it is though, and it ain’t changing.

Given that, let’s look at Jaison’s options. With his rapid mobility in recent years, and his penchant for wanting playing time, Jaison will be forced to go to a lesser program than Xavier. He will also have to sit out a year to do so. Is that what is really in his best interests? If he has to sit out a year anyway, why doesn’t he do it here? If Jaison red shirted next season, this would be the roster the following year, 2003-04:

1 Sr.Romain Sato, G
2 Sr. David Young, G
3 Sr. Lionel Chalmers, G
4 Sr. Randy Holbrook, F
5 Sr. Anthony Miles, F
6 Jr. Keith Jackson, G/F
7 Jr. Anthony Coleman, F
8 Soph. Brandon Cole, F-SF
9 Soph. Dedrik Finn, G
10 Soph. Will Caudle, F
11Soph. Angelo Smith, F
12 Fr. Justin Doleman F
13 Fr. Robert Barker G-F
14 Walk On Soph - Jaison Williams

The obvious problem here is that we already have every scholarship filled. Jaison would have two possible options. The first would be to get financial aid. I am pretty sure that Xavier could loan him all the money he needed to pay his own way, and he could probably get some help from his family. James Posey paid for his Freshman year, and I bet he was able to finance it. When it’s all over, Jaison could have 4 years of college paid for, and 1 year that he pays himself. He could start his masters or double major in his fifth year, which could substantially benefit him down the road.

The other option is that one of the scholarship players will leave, opening up a space for him. We have guys leave all the time. Jaison himself is an example of this. Lloyd Price, Aaron Turner, Desmond Walker, and Kahil Nixon, have all left in recent years. The odds are ripe that a spot will open up, especially with 8 forwards on the team. One of them will probably decide that his bests interests are somewhere else, and that is just the nature of Division 1 basketball.

Either way, Jaison wouldn’t get too much playing time two years from now either, with so many upperclassmen on the team. Still Jaison would be a Sophomore in eligibility, and have 3 years of Xavier coaching and practice under his belt. For the next two years, Jaison would not be playing a lot, but he would be working with some very talented players on what looks to be one of the best teams in the nation. I would not be surprised to see us ranked for the next two years straight. Jaison can be a part of that. Maybe not as much of a part as he would like, but a part none the less.

The real bonus would come the year after that, 2004-05. This is what that roster might look like right now:

1 Sr. Keith Jackson, G/F
2 Sr. Anthony Coleman, F
3 Jr. Brandon Cole, F-SF
4 Jr. Dedrik Finn, G
5 Jr. Will Caudle, F
6 Jr. Angelo Smith, F
7 Soph Justin Doleman F
8 Soph Robert Barker G-F

Jaison would be a senior in age and practice experience, but a junior in eligibility. He is a talented player. If he worked hard for the next two years, I could see him being a major contributor to that team. Outside of Finn, who else on the list is considered to be a ball handler on that squad? When we lose Sato, Chalmers, and Young all at once, playing time will open up. If Williams busted his ass for the next two years, he could be first in line for some major minutes. What coach doesn’t like a veteran player who can run pass and shoot? He is 6-3, which is taller than some of the small forwards that we have played. He could back up Finn and play some shooting guard. He could start at shooting guard for all I know, and you can never have too many good ball handlers.

It is time for Jaison to stop running. He got the shaft, but so what? Life isn’t fair and no situation is perfect. We have a great University and he can get a first rate education. In two years this program will be garnering more national attention than ever before, and he will have a chance to continue in that tradition. He could play on National TV and in the NCAA tournament, which I am sure he has always wanted to do. If he leaves, that may be a long-shot. Stop running Jaison. As long as he is in good academic standing, and he hasn’t violated team rules, this has to be an option. He needs to learn the lesson that life is not about instant gratification, it is about hard work to achieve worthy goals. He could still possibly start for this squad for two years down the road. Somebody needs to present this to him as a viable option.

[> You present a viable option for Jaison, Snipe, but I seriously doubt he would ever exercise the option. To do so would require patience and forbearance, qualities Jaison has not exactly displayed to date. I'm not sure how much thought he put into his departure from X, given the delay in landing at a new program. I hate to say it, because I personally loved what he brought to the team on the court, but he seems to be a bit of a spoiled brat who feels an overblown sense of entitlement. Maturity can cure that, but I don't think he is there yet. -- Homeskillet, 09:49:52 06/03/02 Mon

[> [> The delay in finding a new program is what got me thinking about it. If he doesn't have any great opportunities jumping at him, maybe he should take another look at what he is leaving. This is a great program, and he would have a chance to play down the road. It is going to be tough for him to find a better situation than the one outlined above. Most kids have a good idea of where they are going when they declare a transfer, Jaison seems to be in limbo. He should consider all of his options. His best case senario might still be with Xavier. -- Sniper, 11:01:59 06/03/02 Mon

[> [> [> I'm not disputing that Xavier may very well remain his best option, I just don't think Jaison will see it that way. I also have to think that if he jumped ship with no plan, one of the reasons may have been bad blood with the coaches or team. He was clearly not happy with his playing time, which always provides a source of animosity between players with large egos and their coaching staffs. I think he'll end up at a low mid-major where he will get more time but learn to accept losing a lot. He'll also get almost no exposure, which he seems to crave. -- Homeskillet, 14:35:25 06/03/02 Mon

[> [> [> [> I think that just about every player that doesn't start thinks that the coach is wrong for not giving them more playing time, and I want players that feel that they belong on the court. Playing time is an issue for every coach, every year. I don't see Jaison coming back, but I do feel like it would be the best way for him to achieve his goals. If he goes to a small school with shitty players just because he knows that he will play, he may not be happy when he starts passing the ball to shitty players. -- Sniper, 00:23:45 06/04/02 Tue

[> [> [> [> [> Yeh, it will hurt Jaison's assist totals when he passes it to guys who throw it over the backboard. He'll probably enjoy the big fish in a small pond feel a lot more than the small fish in a big pond atmosphere Xavier offered. Long run, though, he'll probably regret giving up so soon at Xavier. I'm still pissed that Pete and Skip never saw my innate talents and put me in the game in the shootout. I can foul real dirty and there's no way Danny Fortson gets 20 boards on us with me biting his arm. -- Homeskillet, 10:19:58 06/04/02 Tue
