So, William B Davis had an idea for an episode: CSM has realised the error of his ways and want to make amends. He draws Scully into a web of intrigue as she follows up a possible cure for cancer. The only problem is - it doesn't really make much sense. Are we to believe that CSM is using Scully to find the 'science behind the cure for all illnesses' so he can cure himself? Is Scully right when she thinks CSM may have changed? What is odd about this ep is that Scully has very little to go on, when it comes to trusting CSM. He seems to have invented a (slightly unsavoury) fixation with her and she goes along with it. I would be more inclined to believe that Mulder would do this reckless thing, and follow up the story blind, but there is Scully, wandering off in search of the cure for cancer, all on her own. No wonder Mulder is slightly annoyed with her when she gets home. I can't believe Scully would do what she did, even though she makes some effort to stay in touch with both the FBI and Mulder. It smacks of the heightened individuality she experienced in 'Never Again' - and both cases didn't have a good outcome.

The main thing I liked about this ep was the ambiguous title. It cleverly sounds like both friend and enemy and as we saw CSM destroy the disk which would 'save the world' from disease, we still did not know if his actions were a good or a bad thing....
