Ive been good friends with many famous people, and their fame has never seemed to enter into it, on either side. We were/are just friends, like anybody else. Ive never been gobsmacked by fame, probably since Ive been around it from childhood. Famous people are just like everybody else, unless they let it go to their heads. Ive met a couple of those, no names mentioned, and we just never clicked. But you would be surprised at how ordinary the famous really are! Tim Hardin lit farts from the backseat of my VW Bug!
Brian was so far removed, most of the time, from the trappings of fame it wasnt funny. He was as insecure as any young guy could be, about everything! Of course, I never went "out on the town" with him, where he would be photographed being "fabulous" like he was supposed to. That was for Suki, who got into it. I was the friend who came over when he needed a shoulder or someone to go privately raise hell with. We did get stoned a lot.
Of course, being only in my early 20s myself, I didnt have much in the way of insights then, I only figured Brian out later, after he died. I have to thank Timmy Hardin for that. By the time I got to know Timmy, who shared a lot of the same hangups as Brian, I was older, more mature, and better able to see into people.
Brian WAS a good person! Like everybody else, he didnt get on with everybody he knew. Its unfortunate that so many of those people have had so much negative to say about him. We all have hangups and do things that maybe we shouldnt, and Brian was no different. No reason he should be. He was just a kid, really.
