- Celebrating Brian's Life & Work: Favourite Songs -- Delilah, 07:24:25 07/03/08 Thu (bas14-montrealak-1177640201.dsl.bell.ca/70.49.93.9)
A great, uniquely talented artist left us 39 years ago last night. I thought the time was appropriate to talk about the wonderful body of work he left behind. There are so many Stones songs that would not be the same had he not added his magic touch.
My own personal favourite is Ruby Tuesday, for Brian's wonderful recorder and piano. All hints point to him being the actual writer of the song, too. It would be nice to know for sure...
Other favourites, in no particular order:
- Paint It Black
- Little Red Rooster (reportedly his own personal favourite)
- I Can't Be Satisfied (of which he said that it contained "One of the best solos I've ever managed")
- No Expectations (probably the song that describes Brian the best)
- The two songs for which he wrote the riff: The Last Time and Get Off My Cloud
- And the three "marimbas" songs: Under My Thumb, Out of Time and Ride On Baby.
What are YOUR favourite "Brian" songs?

It looks like another group calling themselves the MMOJ was advertising this.
From the Master Musicians of Jajouka:
PLEASE NOTE:
The Master Musicians of Jajouka will NOT be hosting any sort of "Brian Jones" festival in Jajouka this summer. Any information about such an event has been falsely disseminated. Please do not go to Jajouka expecting to hear the Master Musicians and Bachir.
The only way to hear the music of Jajouka live this summer is to see us on the road -- and we hope to see YOU ALL on tour.
Stay tuned for further announcements...hint...hint....(NEW RECORD COMING SOON!!!)

- Brian on That's How Strong My Love Is -- Mock Jogger, 14:14:39 06/26/08 Thu (p57BBA352.dip0.t-ipconnect.de/87.187.163.82)
(Warning: long post only for people highly interested in the subject!)
Before this board crashed, there had been a thread, in which someone said Brian didn't play the organ on the studio version of THSMLI. I don't know where the poster got his information from (though I got an idea), but I think it is very likely it is wrong and it is indeed Brian who played the organ.
Bill Wyman states in his two books (in "Rolling With The Stones" even at two different places) the Stones' version of the song was recorded on 10 May 1965 in Chicago. This fits with the Stones tour plan at the time: they played Chicago on 9 May and then had some days off before they played San Fransisco on 14 May. According to Bill the Stones travelled to Los Angeles on 11 May and continued recording there on 12 and 13 May.
The original liner notes for "Out Of Our Heads" (US version), on which THSMLI was released first, support Bill by stating the track had been recorded in Chicago, without giving a date. So I think there can hardly be any doubt about date and place of the recording. Further, there is no doubt Brian took part in the 10 May recording sessions, since that's when the Stones made their first and famous attempt on "Satisfaction" with Brian on harmonica. (The other songs recorded in Chicago that day feature Brian as well: "Under-Assistant Promo Man" and "Mercy, Mercy".)
There are three possible candidates for playing the organ: Jack Nitzsche, Ian Stewart and - Brian Jones. That's because all of them are listed in the credits on both "Out Of Our Heads" versions (US and UK) under: "Organ/Pianos/Harpsichords". And here is my take why someone might come to the conclusion, Brian didn't play keyboards on that album: because Bill mentions only Ian and Jack for "Organ/Pianos/Harpsichords" in his "personell" section for "Out Of Our Heads" in "Rolling With The Stones". The reason is simple: he never (except for the earliest Stones' recordings) mentions band members in that section, that's why Brian and Mick aren't credited for harmonica and Charlie not for percussion as well.
Apart from the fact that I don't know any source that puts Jack Nitzsche at the scene in Chicago on 10 May 1965, I think it is extremely unlikely Jack came to Chicago for one day to record the part, when the Stones had two people with them who could easily play it themselves: Ian and Brian. (By the way: Jack Nitzsche isn't mentioned in Bill's description of the LA recording sessions the following days either and this although they are among his most detailed reports about the Stones in the studio, including the famous anecdote about the vote on "Satisfaction" to be the next single, which puts the spotlight on eight persons being around: Andrew, Dave Hassinger, Ian Stewart and all five Stones.) So I think Jack Nitzsche couldn't play on THSMLI, because he wasn't at the session.
Ian Stewart would be the next candidate to provide the organ on the track: only, he already was active on piano on the same track, which at the same time features only one guitar, so who other than Brian Jones is the most likely candidate to have played the organ? I cannot think of anyone else.
Other indications it was Brian: Brian was - without any doubt - the one who played the organ on THSMLI on live shows, like he did on "Play With Fire". But while his organ on PWF was considerable different from the harpsichord of the studio version (very likely being played by Jack Nitzsche) - well, he played a different instrument anyway, his live organ on THSMLI is at least basically the same, only that on a live vinyl bootleg I have (one of the Melbourne shows of Feb. 1966) his organ sounds much fuller. There you can hear the full frequency from high to low, very likely played two-handed, which is buried in the studio mix (a shame, because on the live version it sounds fantastic).
The last clue about who exactly played the organ on THSMLI: if it wasn't Brian, what would be other choices on which it was Brian on keyboards on the US-"Out Of Our Heads"? The pianos usually were played by Ian, the harpsichord on PWF very likely by Jack and the other song with organ, "Cry To Me", is a typical example for the Stones two guitar style, very likely with Brian on rhythm guitar. So THSMLI is the one that's left over anyway.
Summarize:
1. Highly unlikely Jack Nitzsche was present when THSMLI was recorded
2. Highly unlikely Ian Stewart played organ on a track he already played piano on
3. Very likely Brian played at the session since it is documented he was present
4. Very likely Brian played the organ, since the guitar was obviously played by Keith and the piano very likely by Ian
5. Very likely Brian played the organ on the recording as he later played it live in a very simular style, only more complex sounding, which seems to be due to the studio mix.
6. It's the most obvious choice of all tracks for Brian playing keyboards of all tracks from "Out Of Our Heads" (US), and since he gets a credit for doing so in the original album credits, he sure did play keyboards on at least one track, don't you think?
It needs very good points to convince me of anything else.
Anyone still with me anyway? So thanks for the patience!

Well tonite is the night, 39 years ago, the dirty deed... To have you all know that tonight is a New Moon for the month, and a SUPER MOON, (these don't come too often though crazily the third one this year), they are very heavy and usually involve high tides, storms, quakes, etc...
Here in England it's around 2 or 3 am .. so what was going on then, 39 years ago.. the massive coverup planned was put into operation.
Let's hope tonites Super New Moon, corresponding with those hours, gets a fresh look at by the habitats of this planet.

- I'll NEVER forget him -- vicki (So sad as July 2 approaches...), 17:43:33 07/01/08 Tue (pool-71-107-183-198.lsanca.dsl-w.verizon.net/71.107.183.198)
Hello everyone,
I'm new to this. I'm so glad you are all out there! You all are wonderful, nice, intelligent people. Just goes to show you the kind of person Brian really must have been to have won the love of such nice people as yourselves.
I feel a little sad right now (as I do every July 1) as that fateful evening of July 2 approaches. Since I'm on the West coast, I try to juxtapose what I was doing when our dear Brian died. Considering the 8-hour time difference, I was probably surfing in Hermosa Beach at around 3:00 p.m. PST. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I'd be saddened about his death FOREVER. Are any of you feeling the same as me?
I have a little story that takes me back to that summer. Flashback to June 8, 1969. I was 14 when my dad came home from work and told me that Brian had left the Stones. (Everyone knew how much I "loved" him.) "Oh NO! We'll never see him again!!" was my shocked response. Learning that he wanted to make his "own brand of music", I figured it was probably their earlier sounds he wanted to emulate. I rushed out to a music store and bought a beautiful glass cylinder and a metal one that guitarists use to play bottleneck. I wrote a letter of encouragement for him also with the words, "...you are unique and special," with words to the effect of "you brought so MUCH to the band and elsewhere, that some day people will be asking, "Mick? Mick who?" I remember mailing it on Monday, June 16th. Considering snail mail, it probably took two and a half weeks to get to the London office. I wonder to this day if he ever got my package.
Just feeling sentimental...

This is something which has bothered me since I was 19..How could they make an album called "Their Satanic Majesties Request", and then follow it with an album like Beggars Banquet which opened with that horrible "Sympathy for the Devil", Is that why they went to South America to learn Black Magic? I would imagine Brian wanted that TSMR called "Cosmic Christmas"or "Lets All Make Love in London Tonight" instead. Is this the reason that the more you follow them, the worse things become and they just go on and on and on? I threw all my Rolling Stones records out the window in 1973 because of this. How could anybody in their right mind like them? And they made some of the worst drug music, some of the worst violence music, and some of the worst mental illness music. Im disgusted and ashamed to think I ever even took those two seriously..and I wont be sad when they finally die. At least we will be rid of Satan.

I was thinking about the post-Brian Stones and it got me wondering what the people on this board think of them. I apologize if this has been discussed before, I'm still very new here.
Myself, I like Sticky Fingers, I think that Exile is too heavy on the brass and could lose the back-up singers, I don't much care for Goat's Head Soup, I am indifferent to It's Only Rock & Roll, I don't like Black & Blue and I like Some Girls. I don't know much about the Stones after that.
I think that Mick Taylor was a splendid guitarist and to this day, I regret that he left the band.
I'm curious to know what other people think.

I apologize if this topic has already been beaten to death. I'm new here.
I was wondering if the people here have seen A Degree of Murder. If you have, what did you think of the story, the acting and, of course, the music?
My personal opinion is that it is not a good film. I think that it could have been good, but that it is poorly constructed.
Anita's acting really gets on my nerves. Maybe she comes off better in the original German version. On the other hand, I have a presskit for the film which states that Schloendorff deliberately chose untried and non professional actors for his film.
The one redeeming value for me is, well, the music. I confess that I was a little apprehensive when I popped the DVD in the machine for the first time. But I should not have doubted Brian! His score is great! The music blends in really well with the atmosphere of the film.
One can only wish he'd been given another chance at scoring a film. And a better one the second time around.

It might be a dumb question, but did you ever get the impression that Mick and Keith were competing with Brian, to see who could outdress who? It's really noticable from about 1966 on. And it seems like the more over the top Brian dressed, though everything he wore looked wicked on him, Mick and Keith went over the top too, in response to it. It's as if they said to themselves, Well, if he can do it, WE can do it! Nobody's gonna upstage us! But one of the far out things about Brian was that he looked good in anything. Hell, if Brian had worn a sack cloth he could probably make it swing! On somebody else it'd look fucking ridiculous, lol. Ya know what I mean? Respect.
Mark
Ps-Didn't Brian once say during an interview that he would have loved to be a fashion designer?
