Old Spice:

You've hit the nail on the head so perfectly that it's hard to comment on it, but reading the "letter" from Brian to Linda Keith struck me as a fellow who was shocked at what some people will do to themselves...not that he wasn't someone who might do such a thing himself, mind you...but it didn't read like a "love" letter.

Being British, it wasn't unusual for him to call her "darling", with a lower case "d", as opposed to "Darling", with an upper case. I've been called "darling" by Englishmen in front of their wives. It seemed like he was trying desperately to molify her, but he wasn't doing a very good job. Brian was a brilliant man...scholastically...but in interpersonal relationships, he was mentally retarded.

It's obvious he never meant to hurt anyone, since his "friends" still adore his memory. He just wasn't ready yet...if ever...to affix himself to one lady romantically. He seemed at that stage in his life to have so much Romance to go around that "the one" would allude him even if she came up to him, bit him on the bottom and said "I"m here!" It would have taken her years to get through to him...but she'd need patience and tolerance. Most young ladies looking for a man won't tolerate that situation.
