Subject: Carlo Little

It's six years today since the passing of the guy Brian wanted to sit on the drummers stool in his band. I don't know if they were called Rollin' Stones at that point? Carlo Little was the same age as Stu. (The much maligned Geoff Bradford, who, the story goes left the fray when he realised Keith was in the frame was actually nearly 10 yrs older than Keith, so that may have had something to do with Brian's thinking in giving Keith the gig!!)

Anyway, Carlo was a professional musician, who was used to being paid for his work, so when Brian couldn't guarantee a pay packet, Carlo moved on. There is a story Carlo did buy Brian's Johnny Cash records, so Carlo wasn't totally mercenery! In fact Carlo also suggested to Brian that he should go after Charlie Watts. Charlie and Carlo were from the same part of North West London. An area where Ginger Baker and Keith Moon also hailed from. Moonie actually went to Carlo for some drum lessons. I read somewhere that Carlo's observation and advice amounted to, 'I don't know quite what your doing, but just keep doing it'.

Carlo and Ricky Fenson (Brown) filled in as the rythym section for the Stones in the early days and there's a letter to be found somewhere in Jonesville, from Brian, to a friend, extolling Carlo and Ricky's thunderous sound as just what he was looking for. There are also quotes from Keith praising the contribution of Carlo in establishing and influencing the sounds of the sixties. (Ricky Fenson is still around; last I heard he was living in sheltered accommodation, but still interested in making music.)

Anyway, I know Carlo is sadly missed by his wife Iris and their family. From the very little I've read about him, I can tell he was one helluva bloke. A real mountain of a man respected by all who knew him. I'm sure the Bremeister appreciated Carlo's role in the development of his Rollin' Stones.
