Well, we have 2 separate realities going on at once. There's the island where we have very few people left alive. But in the other, in LA, most of the main cast is alive. They never crashed on the island but are slowly meeting up with each other & vaguely remembering their connections.

So I suppose our ending is that the sideways reality is what will survive while one of our lostaways must remain on the island to keep the evil there from ever leaving. That bit from season 1 where Locke discussed backgammon, about it being 2 equal sides-one black & one white, was in fact what the island really is.
