Subject: do I talk funny?
In reply to: Stardoe 's message, "The bride and killer santas" on 18:49:46 07/11/07 Wed

My sister move out to Nevada from Massachusetts and although there isn't such a difference in accents so much, the Nevadans talk much more slowly & laid back while my sister had her East coast fast talking going on. She talks more like them now, during a visit out there her friends said she sounds fine next to my talking!!! But I digress.

Lots of Brits have done American accents well & lots of Yanks fail at British accents. I thought it was funny that Brits didn't want Rene Zellweger to play Bridget Jones when Anthony Hopkins or Gary Oldman play Americans all the time even famous ones with no problem. We do have some Brits on our TV like Simon Cowell of American Idol fame & that Scotish guy who's now a late night talk show host (Fergeson?). A new show called The Riches has Eddie Izzard & Minnie Driver playing Southerners which is rather funny.

Most Americans find the British/Aussie/NZ accents very exotic and sexy. Did you see Love Actually (the one with Hugh Grant as a love sick Blair)? An average guy Englishman goes to Minnesota and due to his accent has a half dozen gorgeous women after him in no time flat. In Quentin Tarantino's new film Death Proof, a New Zealander has a role of a stuntwoman (which is what she is in real life) & gets faux-testy with someone who calls her Australian. Perhaps you'd enjoy that bit but it is a violent film.
