Well shows seem to run in cycles like this and it usually depends on what becomes a big hit. Before The Cosby Show was on everybody said sticoms were dead and then suddenly there were sticoms all over the place.
The success of CSI has caused the networks to churn out the crime procedural type shows and LOST has got the weirdness genre active again. No one seems to have tried to copy Desperate Housewives yet but I'm sure there will be those imitators as well.

Crime stories havw always been popular as you say in tv and also in movies. Check out films from the 30s and 40s. Tons of whodunnits. And it sure is better than the glut of "reality" shows. I've tried a few of the new crime shows and so far I'm liking Criminal Minds but that's more of an FBI thing based on the Behavioral Sciences Unit--a la Mulder and his profiling. After all these years people are still borrowing ideas from The X-Files!

I think the best new show this season is Prison Break which involves crime but isn't like the other crime solving shows.
