Speaking from a US prosective I have this to say. Firstly on Fawndoo's comments and questions: >>I dare say we've all heard the rumblings coming from the US about possible pre-emptive action against Iraq......Prime Minister Blair has promised to make available to the public the dossier of evidence against the Hussein Regime in "a few weeks"......all in all, we would seem to conform to the ancient curse about living in interesting times. Anyone else have thoughts on this? Is the US standing at the dividing line between self-defense and being the aggressor? Should they try to bring the UN on side? Is Bush guilty of sabre-rattling? Will the UK enter any conflict with the US, or will this be the first major foreign policy difference between the UK and the US since the Suez crisis?

Interesting times - and since this place has a wide spectrum of opinion about most things, I thought it might be interesting to tap that. Thoughts, anyone?<<

Actually what this all boils down to isn't so much the US wishing to rout out Sadam as much as it has to do with the control of Oil in the Middle East. See as it stands The Bush administration has a large interest in oil reserves as most of the higher memembers and friends of the President are Oil industialists. In their view if Sadam was removed and a person who would be more willing to work with them about the oil put in, then they wouldn't have such a shortage with gas and other important exports.

Are we acting as an agressor, part of me says yes, and part of me says no. There's been no proof as of thus far that President Hussian(sp?) has been stock pileing weapons, and the US's track record on routing out leaders is all but sterling. :/ So part of me sees this whole thing as a way for our President to make a "Statment" about himself. Rather then being the man who stood up for what was right and helped his country regroup economically he thinks he can put himself in the history books as being the guy who removed Hussian from power. In short, "Great Superpower defeats evil overlord! Extra Extra, Read all about it!" I suppose in some weird backwards way he believes that a war, even a small one might help stimulate our economic situation some how. WWII oddly enough allowed us to get out of the great depression, and pull up for a number of years. (Then again we really wouldn't have been in this situation if the Bush Administration hadn't have given out the tax cut. Which put us in a problem when the towers fell. NO EXTRA MONEY WHEN WE NEEDED IT!)

And yet, Iraq hasn't allowed UN inspectors in, and that begs the question, if they have nothing to hide why block an inspection? So that part of me wonders if, in the case that President Hussian is hiding anything, we would be stoping a very critical stituation before it starts.

As for the UN, I think maybe perhaps if the right people were able to persuade the Iraque goverment into allowing for a few inspections that would release most of the tension. Also if you'll notice the fact that it's Iraq rather then Pakastan or India shows that Bush is trying to use the newer laws that Congress passed allowing him to instate a type of war by bypassing Congress. (Still think we learned anything from Vitnam yet?)

One note to Iocon, the factor on the facility at Guantanemo Bay(I think you got it right, but then again I'm not much of a speller. ;P)is that at the moment the group is being held as combatants. As far as their treament is concerned, they are receiving meals, and have an area for prayer and such. I'm not totally sure of the stituation right now to fully comment, as there has been little about that.

However the detaining process by us at imigration is appalling. I understand the reasoning, but if they can't find proof of a person trying to terrories the country then why are they detaining them for so long? Reminds me sadly of the time when the US placed Japaness Americans in camps for OUR protection. (No Germans or Italians were rounded up) and the spys that were captured were Caucassion. *Sigh* Justices for all, sometimes I really wonder.

I really hope this doesn't lead to war as it would create one bad situation after another. And were not even though with Afganistan yet! Look what happened this moring with the President and the Govener of Afganistan, an assassination attempt! So why are we rushing off to fight a war, when Afganistain isn't even settled yet?

And don't get me started on the Saudi Princes...

Ds
