Because at the end of the day, it's still not a real thing.
So if you're going to modify a toy, you might as well do something original, as in something that is otherwise not available at all.

Granted. But I wasn't arguing otherwise.
As I said, I don't really regret doing my cartoon coloured Optimus Prime, because I did around June 2000, long before anybody could have known about New Year Special Convoy.

It would be if you're repainting the SpyChanger Scourge, since a SpyChanger Laser Prime would otherwise simply not be in existence.

But repainting a large Scourge/Black Convoy as Laser Prime would be cheating IMO, because it's just a lame way to add a toy to your collection.

Repainting it as an Optimus Prime in different colours (not Laser Prime colours) would be cool -- e.g.: painting the chest red and the "windows" blue to make his torso look more "Prime" like, as opposed to painting it all light gray to make it look more like Laser Prime. That would be cool because it's something more original. Something that, if you hadn't gone and done it yourself, there would be no way that you could've had it.

So when I say that alterations should involve originality, what I mean is that you should be making either a completely new/original character, or an original modification of a character (e.g.: more show like).

But taking a toy and modifying it to look like a toy that already exists but you don't have (e.g.: repainting a spare Cheetor in the same colours as Tigatron) is, IMO, cheating.

And customs definitely should NEVER be included in your Transformers count, original or not. I'm sure most of you would accuse me of 'artificially' increasing my collection size if I were to include my customs into my toy count.
