Subject: Poem about 9/11

Dear Folks,

I'm still alive and relatively well and living in Louisiana. I've been watching a lot more news than comedy since the events of 9/11, but I hope to get back in a comedy kind of mood some day soon. "Cake or death" somehow loses a bit of its charm when there has been so much death lately.

I wrote the following poem that I'd like to share with you. Please forgive me for it having absolutely nothing to do with Eddie. :-}

LOST AND FOUND - 9/11/2001
by Lori Smith

Control of four fuel-heavy planes was lost.
Through madness crew and passengers were lost.
Our grip upon reality seemed lost.
The massive towers blazed and crumbled, lost.

Uncounted lives were vaporized and lost.
Choked with fumes, air's wholesomeness was lost.
A wave of heroes sent to help was lost.
Beloved spouses, siblings, colleagues--lost.

Ash-white victims roamed the wreckage, lost.
The doctors waited, but their cause was lost.
A million tears were shed in sorrow, lost.
The nation's calm complacency was lost.

And yet the symbol of our might still stands.
Not as a building, but as helping hands.
The volunteers that went to any length,
To save a life, are central to our strength.

These common folks from every walk of life,
Despite their fear plunged straight into the strife.
Support and blood flowed in from every state.
It's people that have made this country great.

Our skins and creeds may not be all the same,
In hardship, though, we nurture freedom's flame.
United in our strong diversity,
America holds tight to liberty.

Now raising flags with patriotic fire,
It's justice, not revenge that we require.
In time our cries for justice will be hushed.
The fiend bin Laden's network will be crushed.

With help from friends in many foreign lands,
We will root out these terror-plotting bands.
So bless us God and Allah, Yahweh too,
Bless each Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and Jew.

At times when villains act our heroes rise.
It's pride that now brings tears to our red eyes.
Self-sacrifice and bravery abound.
America's new heroes have been found!
