Subject: The song singer, and the soul question

If the songs question is to be taken quite literally, the only answer I can come up with Giles. He is seen more than once singing songs, and they tend to be bluesy. His song in "Restless" is mostly exposition, I suppose, rather than things to come, but the line about Xander not bleeding on the couch could be seen as forecasting something. The expository purpose, though, would fit in with WtP's question about "is that the only purpose".

I don't remember the other songs well enough to know if they could be taken as being about things to come, but as I say they are at least bluesy and to that extent could be taken to be "of sorrow". I have not the least idea in the world what WtP's Neil Diamond remark meant. Any Neil Diamond experts here?

Giles is also heard playing "Tales of Brave Ulysses", though not singing it. The Ulysses reference is suggestive, though again I don't really know how to close the tie-in.

And on the issue of a soul for Xander: I think the idea of Xander seeking not just to become a vampire, but a vampire with a soul, is really strongly suggested by that scene in "Angel" I mentioned. Of course, whether he actually seeks it after he's turned is a completely separate question. But if this whole scenario plays out at all (which I'm by no means so sure of -- I'm just playing puzzle games here) -- it seems to me that the whole soul issue for Vamp Xander is likely to at least arise. This is especially the case given Joss's remarks about the way in which Angelus will get his soul back not being what we expect -- I mean, cheez, the ways for vampires to both get and lose souls seem to be proliferating all over the map. And to me, given the prophecies about "the vampire with a soul", it provides a plausible reason why he might think that being turned could help Buffy -- which is otherwise mighty difficult to figure out.
