He? Anya will certainly be not singing any of *these* kinds songs of sorrow (remember they're songs of things to come). That's a misread. But her story will indeed (and in part) motivate Xander. And Xander can only Shanshu if he gets a soul. I really don't know that he will. To know why, read WtP's alternate S5 season ending: Buffy dead, Willow dead, Tara dead, and Xander dead! There's absolutely no guarantee the story will end well for any character. I was absolutely horrified after reading that's what they had planned.
And you're right about Good and Bad Spike not turning Xander. But what about Kookoo Spike ? Especially if the madness is induced by Nyarlatothep (if you've read the mythos, you'll have noted its one of its most fearsome weapons). Not saying that's what's going to happen. In fact I would bet against it. But it's not impossible. And I'm looking forward to Vamp Xander-Buffy-Willow interaction. The snark, the bite, the rivalry/enmity with Spike! Oh, my!
