Subject: Virus Protection

I just got this from a friend. I hope it really works. Thought I'd put it up here in case it could help anyone. :-)

Just learned this today from my "puter guru" ! Makes Sense to me, thought I'd share with all.

VIRUS PROTECTION TACTIC
To protect your E-Mail against infecting all of your e-mail addresses follow the directions below. As you know, when/if a worm gets into your computer it heads straight for your email address book and sends itself to all on the list, infecting all. This will NOT keep YOU from getting the virus, but will stop it from infecting others in your address book from receiving it,AND it WILL ALERT YOU to the fact it has arrived!

Here is what you do:
First: Open your Address Book and click on "new contact"
Second: In the window where you type in your friends first name, type in !000 (that is an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros (not O's) )
In the window below it will prompt you to enter the new email address: type in: WormAlert@alert.com (If it tells you this is not a valid address, just say yes to add it, or OK.). Then complete everything by clicking add, enter ok.

Now, here is what you have done and why it works: the name !000 will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This is where the worm will start in an effort to send itself, BUT when it tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you have
entered(Worm Alert). If the first attempt fails,(which it will), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.

Here is the second great advantage of this method: if an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your Inbox almost immediately, hence, if you ever get an email addressed to WormAlert could not be delivered, you would know right away that you have the worm virus in your system, then you can take steps to rid yourself of it.

[> Sorry shirley....this happens to be a hoax. It will give you no protection against this type of virus. I'll post a link to a site that details why this is not a good idea. -- Schnee, 22:05:55 11/09/01 Fri

[> [> [> Thanks Schnee. Geez, people just send these things on willy nilly, don't they. I thought this guy from the fish and game commission had a head on his shoulders. (sigh) Sorry guys... but at least now you know it's a hoax. :-) -- Shirleym, 22:53:24 11/09/01 Fri

[> [> [> [> I don't even know if it's a hoax as much as it is easy to get around. The hackers know about this fix so they can just set their viruses to start at the second or third entry in the address book. You'd think these guys could find something better to do with their time, wouldn't you? -- Zzoo, 03:16:55 11/12/01 Mon
