Subject: Response from the Editor of 24 Images

After playing phone tag for several days, Claude Racine, editor of 24 Images, and I finally connected. We discussed the Roy Dupuis article written by Andre Roy, which appeared in their Autumn 2001 issue.

Mr. Racine graciously listened as I pointed out various aspects of Mr. Roy's article with which I was uncomfortable: the apparently outdated source of information (no mention of The Last Chapter nor Seraphin), the obvious omission of such works as Les Filles de Calleb and Scoop, and the portrayal of the Royettes as mere "girls". He gave me permission to take
notes about his responses.

Following is a paraphrased version of Mr. Racine's remarks, which I, personally, found interesting.

Only 48 out of 1,000 actors were chosen for inclusion in the Autumn 2001 issue of 24 Images. They "appoint" them as good actors by their inclusion. On the other hand, they received numerous complaints from those that were not included in their list.

Mr. Racine said that Andre Roy used some "humour" in the text of the writing. However, he thought the article was favorable and that they think Roy Dupuis is a good actor.

24 Images is a magazine dedicated to cinema techniques. As such, they don't have a high opinion of "teleseries" products. They have a very critical viewpoint of TV series compared to cinema.

This is a quote: "We say it is very low to what he appeared in in cinematique. He lost his time. Some say he is no good. We don't think that. We think if he dedicated himself to "film" he would still have a great image." (Please note that Mr.
Racine did not say this in a disrespectful way. He stated it as a matter of fact.)

Mr. Racine talked about being overexposed in publicity. An actor sells their name for a well known film, but the image can be "touched" through other exposure, such as teleseries. He
said that Roy would be great in more films and he should dedicate himself more to cinema.

The article was written (submitted) in July. At that time, the primary actors of "Seraphin" were unknown, therefore, no reference was made to it. The omission of such previous teleseries as "Les Filles de Calleb" and "Scoop", as well as the current filming of "The Last Chapter", was due to their very nature. They are not cinema, which admittedly is the focus of 24 Images.

Royettes can rest assured that a true, concise depiction of our group has been relayed to Mr. Racine: our admiration and discussion of Roy's talent and depth of his work (rather than just his eyes and chin), the international and cultural exchanges, the charitable endeavors and the vast friendships that have developed. It was made very clear that the Royettes are not mere girls.

Cheers,

Joyce

[> Very interesting, Joyce. They're real cinemasnobs aren't they. I've run into this so much in the jazz world where anything that crosses over to being commercial is looked down upon. Mr. Roy and his editor are still going to hear from me. ;) -- Shirleym, 18:58:49 11/09/01 Fri

[> [> As they should, Shirley, as they should!! I told Mr. Racine to expect an avalanche of letters. A friend of mine read all the "reviews" and said they are all critical!! So much for "humour"..... -- Joyce, 19:23:08 11/09/01 Fri

[> Along time ago in a galaxy far far... no wait, I remember now it was the 60's, I read an article by Pauline Kael in which she took on the Theatresnobs who looked down on Marlon Brando beacuse he was making movies and forsaking his "art" in the theatre. (This was when he was making Last Tango in Paris, not Free Money). She just said "What theatre?" (Theatre then was Hello Dolly ... it was also Hair but that's another story)That's what I thought of when I read the first message about this the other day. Is there really anybody who thought "cinema" such as Bleeders was a better use of anybody's time than LFN. -- Trish, 20:27:24 11/10/01 Sat

[> [> Screamers, more so than Bleeders, is the defintive illustrative art form that stands alone as the consummate example of the cinematic medium which best highlights the spectrum of talents, with its multi-colored palette of infinite hues of dramatic distinction, exhibited by Roy Dupuis. -- SCC, 16:16:05 11/11/01 Sun
