Subject: If you've been there

For those who have visited Montreal and Toronto during the Cons, there are two movies I've seen recently (one is old) that made me instantly nostalgic for Canada. Check out The Score with Robert DeNiro, Marlon Brando, and Edward Norton. It's set in Montreal's old town. I also watched The Boondock Saints, which I had seen before and really liked, with Willem Dafoe in a totally outrageous role, and our own Carlo Rotto doing a great, and funny Mafia turn. It is set in Toronto. Supposedly the film is set in south Boston, and I'm sure a few set up shots were, LOL, but those black squirrels racing around the park with the Toronto waterfront in the background were a dead giveaway to where the film was really made. Here's wishing our Canadian cousins a Happy New Year despite the fact that they are obviously taking over the world, beginning with Hollywood, LOL.

And a Happy New Year to the rest of you as well.

[> Happy New Year, Zzoo! I loved "The Score" for precisely that reason--that it showed off Montreal so beautifully. Couldn't you just picture R.D. in that gorgeous apartment? The Washington Post travel section recently promoted Toronto as an inexpensive alternitive to L.A. for film and T.V. buffs. The writer said that "Good Will Hunting" was another movie that used Toronto to mimic Boston. I used to live near Boston, and I didn't have a clue! ...which is no surprise to anyone who's spent any time at all driving around there--movie trailers everywhere!

The article mentioned some specific places as being particularly good for stargazing: for hotels, the Park Hyatt, the Windsor Arms, and the Sutton Place, and the Four Seasons, along with the Harbourfront Antique Market (Peta used to shop there on weekends, I think) and restaurants like Bistro 990.

The airfares are making me nostalgic, too--about $150 round trip from Baltimore. I think the cheapest I ever got was $189.

That's why Hollywood is so upset about runaway production. It take the jobs away from Los Angeles, and New York, leaving many actors and crews unemployed. American companies filming in Canada use Canadian actors and crews. The producers/studios make money, but everyone else just keeps looking for work. The producers get tax breaks, cheaper crew and cheaper actors. More bang for the dollar, as they say. It's good for the Canadians, but not for the American workers. Why don't the Canadians come to the U.S. and film? Why? No tax break, that's why.

But, it's nice to see Toronto and Montreal. Just wish they would film them as Toronto and Montreal, not Boston, Los Angeles, New York or any other American city or town. Most of Showtime's MOWs are filmed in Canada also. It's not just feature films, but television movies and television series.

Somebody get me off this platform. Enough I say.
