Subject: OT/Movie: "The Deep End"

Has anyone else seen the movie, "The Deep End" yet? I saw it today and I was really impressed. It's a high profile indie suspense film starring Tilda Swinton and Goran Visnjic (who plays the very swoon-worthy Dr. Luka Kovac on "E.R."). It tells the tale of a mother who tries to cover up the accidental death of her son's gay lover, and is blackmailed in the process (Visnjic portrays the blackmailer). The direction is top notch, and the cinematography, done on location at Lake Tahoe, is simply gorgeous--each scene is so beautifully framed that it looks like a work of art. Although I thought about Alberta for the female lead (and I think she certainly would have enjoyed the role), Tilda Swinton did such an outstanding job that she is already being mentioned as a possible Oscar candidate. You really can put yourself in her shoes as she deals, all by herself, with the unfolding tragedy. I really like Goran Visnjic as an actor--I'm a big "E.R." fan, and he has that combination of solid acting skills, sex appeal, and physicality that put him in the same league as Roy Dupuis....and that's the problem. Being an R.D. fan, it's hard to watch this movie without being very aware of just how good this role would have been for him. It requires quite a range, going from slimy blackmailer to compassionate friend, with a definite sexual undercurrant along the way--just R.D.'s cup of tea, I think. If he wasn't considered for it, he sure as heck should have been.

So, overall, if suspense movies are your thing, this might be one for you to check out.

We've been having absolutely lovely weather this weekend here in Maryland. I hung out at the beach with my brother and sister-in-law yesterday, enjoying both their company and the beautiful sunny day. Here's wishing all of you a happy Labor Day!
