Subject: CQS4 Panels: Carlo Rota


It's time for another walk down memory lane. :-)

Saturday, May 26th...When I first saw Carlo up on the podium, I got a big, goofy grin on my face. Why? Well, if you've ever met Carlo, or seen him in action, you need no explanation. If you haven't...just think of all of the very best points of Mick Schtoppel...the high energy gregariousness, the zaniness, the "Laissez les bon temps roulet" party-animal kind of attitude...combined with a very UN-Mick like level of high intelligence, sophistication, and savvy humor. He's the sort of person who can give you nothing more than a certain LOOK as he walks into a room, and he will have you in stiches. Everyone perked up as he took to the stage and started to pace restlessly about.

Not one to be shy, Carlo decided to get the ball rolling by humorously tweaking the fans: "Let's not have any of those innocent questions...let's get to the nitty gritty. Ask me who I'm sleeping with!" (Big roar of laughter from the audience!)

Suddenly, the audience fell quiet...a fan's cell phone was ringing. Oh, NO!...but Carlo knew just what to do...answer it, of course! He strode over, plucked it right out of the surprised fan's hand, and said (to the presumably unsuspecting caller), "Hello! I'm Carlo Rota!" :O)

Later, when asked about a detail from a particular episode, he responded, "I have to confess something...I don't really read the entire script." (chuckles from the audience). A fan gushed, "I just loved guys with bald heads...can I touch your head?" Carlo bantered back: "Is that all you want to touch?" He further clarified, "I do NOT have any animal print boxers on...actually I'm not wearing any underwear...I never wear underwear at conventions...it's just easier that way." LOL

Commenting on the types of roles he tends to get offered, he said, "I mostly get Euro bad guys." He stated that all of the "bathroom stuff" from "View Of The Garden" was ad-libbed. Finally, he joked to a fan, "[After] five seasons of Nikita--you want me to start explaining it?"

Well, Carlo--if anyone could, I would vote for YOU. :-)

Remember how I said that Carlo admitted to not reading the entire script? Well, he told us the story about a phone call that he received from Joel Surnow, just prior to filming: "[Joel] said, 'It's you pal...you're Mr. Jones.' And I said, 'Who's Mr. Jones?'".

And you know how Italians like to "talk with their hands" ;-) ...Carlo joked about how difficult the transition was going from Mick to Mr. Jones: [waving his hands in the air, demonstrating), "They constantly had to remind me not to use my hands!"
