...excerpts from a review of the new fall TV shows in yesterday's Chicago-Sun-Times by Phil Rosenthal, TV critic:

Some of what you need to know about the new fall TV season:

*Fox's "24," CBS' "The Agency," ABC's "Alias," NBC's "UC: Undercover" and ABC's "Thieves" are all about federal agents of one sort or another who track dangerous criminals and/or try to thwart crime.
*CBS' "Wolf Lake" is a show about people who turn into wolves. It is the second hardest show to believe after ABC's "Alias," a show about a college student who winds up as a secret agent.
*"Alias," from "Felicity" creator J.J. Abrams, has been nicknamed "La Femme Felicity." Another good name for it would be "UC: Undercover," but that's already taken by NBC.

*Every review of Jason Alexander's new ABC sitcom, "Bob Patterson," will refer to "Seinfeld" and all but three will mention "The Michael Richards Show."
*The WB has canceled "Lost in the USA" even before its scheduled Sept. 30 debut.
*"Lost in the USA" was an awful lot like NBC's "Lost" and CBS' "The Amazing Race," anyway.
*Fox's "Love Cruise" is a cross between "Survivor" and "Temptation Island" on a boat. Sadly, the boat is not the Titanic.
*TGI what? "Full House" stars Bob Saget and John Stamos are back on Friday nights. Saget is in the WB's "Raising Dad" and Stamos is in ABC's "Thieves." UPN's "One on One" is the new show for "Full House" fans who miss seeing a show about a single sportscaster thrust into a fatherhood role, but it's on Mondays.
*"Wolf Lake," "Bob Patterson," "UC: Undercover," "Off Centre" and "Emeril" all have undergone major changes from the original pilots the networks bought. Read into this whatever you want.
*The WB's "Elimidate Deluxe" is a variation on the forthcoming syndicated dating game show, "Elimidate," which is "Chains of Love" without the chains.
*Fox's "Pasadena" is set in Pasadena, Calif., and shot in Vancouver.
*The WB's "Maybe It's Me" was originally called "Maybe I'm Adopted," which, sight unseen, apparently upset members of the adoption community even though it in no way made light of adoptions, adoptees or adopters.
*"Reba" stars Reba McEntire. "Emeril" stars Emeril Lagasse. "The Ellen Show" stars Ellen DeGeneres. "According to Jim" stars Jim Belushi. "The Bernie Mac Show" stars Bernie Mac. "The Education of Max Bickford" stars Richard Dreyfuss.
*NBC's "Scrubs" is a comedic "ER," assuming you don't giggle every time the writers on "ER" throw a little hospital gunplay in to wake everyone up.
*Fox is high on "The Tick," a live-action but largely inferior version of the "Tick" animated series it wasn't so high on and unceremoniously canceled a few years ago.
*Half the people on "Love Cruise" are Chicagoans. This will not necessarily be a point of civic pride.
*Bill Bellamy's "Men, Women & Dogs" on UPN sure looks a lot like Bill Bellamy's movie "How to Be a Player."
*Steven Bochco's new ABC legal drama, "Philly," opens with the lawyer played by series star Kim Delaney getting thrown in jail. Bochco's old legal drama, "L.A. Law," opened with the lawyer played by series star Harry Hamlin getting thrown in jail.
*"Philly" star Kim Delaney ends her name with an "ey." "Pasadena" star Dana Delany just ends her name with a "y."
*Just because NBC's "Crossing Jordan" is about a medical examiner who solves crimes doesn't mean it's a ripoff of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." It might be a complete coincidence.
*It also might be a coincidence that "Philly" stars former "NYPD Blue" star Delaney as a lawyer who works for the underdog while airing opposite "Judging Amy," which stars former "NYPD Blue" star Amy Brenneman as a judge who works for the underdog.
*And don't say a thing about CBS' "The Guardian," which is about a hotshot attorney who works for the underdog.
*CBS' "Citizen Baines" has James Cromwell playing a U.S. Senator who gets the heave-ho by voters and moves back into his daughters' lives. The daughters are played by Embeth Davidtz (who grew up in South Africa), Jacinda Barrett (who's from Australia) and Jane Adams (an American). Though the three try to mask their accents, we suggest that perhaps the senator was on the foreign affairs committee and really enjoyed his junkets.
*Helen Shaver plays a transsexual on CBS' "The Education of Max Bickford." Should make for an easy transition for longtime viewers tuning in to the slot that used to belong to "Touched by an Angel."
*"Smallville" is the WB's teenage take on the Superman legend--the kid of steel?--with a hint of "Roswell," which went to UPN.
*UPN's "Enterprise" is a prequel to the original "Star Trek" series, but its spaceship looks infinitely more advanced. Apparently, the aesthetic of the 23rd century would evolve from high-tech plasma video screens toward fake-looking flashing lights.
*NBC's "Inside Schwartz" is a one-joke show. The one joke is that this Schwartz guy's life plays out as a sporting event. Nope. That won't get old fast.
*The lesson producer Dick Wolf learned from the failure of "Deadline" and the success of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" is that it can't hurts to stick "Law & Order" on the title. The result: this year's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
*Fox's "24," which stars Kiefer Sutherland as a man trying to foil an assassination attempt and has each of its planned 24 episodes dramatizing an hour in a single day, will be rerun on FX. If it gets canceled in 13 weeks, Fox can rename it "13."
*Ellen DeGeneres plays a lesbian in CBS' "The Ellen Show." OK, so sometimes we're not surprised.

[> [> Ohh, that Phil Rosenthal is a funny guy...love the snarky attitude. Now quick...name the network that does NOT have a new spy/agent/operative show coming out....reasonable conclusion: Fox, CBS, ABC, and NBC noticed that LFN got cancelled, and USA Network did not..."La Femme Felicity"--okay, I'll be there.
